The Village of DeGraff must now rely on the Logan County Sheriff’s Office for police services after Police Chief Terry Brentlinger left for another agency. Village Mayor Stephanie Orsborne said the decision was made by the council to contract with the sheriff’s office after an issue with the contract between DeGraff and Quincy for police coverage.
DeGraff was contracted with the Village of Quincy to provide police coverage, but, according to Mayor Orsborne, an issue developed with the contract with Quincy.
Brentlinger, while on medical leave, was informed that the contract the village shared with Quincy for police coverage would possibly be terminated. If that were to happen, Orsborne told Chief Brentlinger that the village would need to reduce his hours to part-time status since a majority of Chief Brentlinger’s salary was paid by the village of Quincy. Once it became clear that the contract with Quincy would be cancelled, Mayor Orsborne informed Chief Brentlinger of the change.
After a few weeks had passed, Chief Brentlinger informed Mayor Orsborne that he would be seeking employment elsewhere. Mayor Orsborne talks about the situation:
Mayor Orsborne said that her office was then contacted by Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds. Sheriff Dodds said that he was made aware of the change and offered the village coverage by the Sheriff’s office. Mayor Orsborne approached the village council about Dodds’ offer, and it was decided that the village would enlist the Sheriff’s office for police coverage:
Ultimately, the village council will decide whether to renew its contract with the Sheriff’s office at the end of the year.
