Governor Mike DeWine introduced his final state budget proposal Monday, focusing on Ohio families and children.
The $200 billion budget proposal for the next two years includes a variety of key initiatives, including a new child tax credit to assist families with the rising costs of childcare.
The tax credit would provide parents up to $1,000 per year for each child under six.
DeWine also highlighted plans to improve educational support, with programs aimed at improving reading levels, eye care, and driver’s education.
Additionally, the budget guarantees admission to Ohio’s colleges for the top 5% of students, with $5,000 yearly scholarships for those students.
A proposed increase in the sports gaming tax will raise funding for youth sports and school activities, as well as repairs to stadiums statewide.
The proposal aims to generate $130-180 million annually.
With less federal funding expected, DeWine emphasized the importance of this budget in getting Ohio back on track.
Lawmakers will now review and adjust the proposal before DeWine signs it into law by the end of June.
