A school in Champaign County is being recognized statewide for its work improving literacy. Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools announced that Dohron Wilson Elementary School has been named a 2026 Science of Reading Champion.

The recognition comes from Ohio Department of Education and Workforce and Mike DeWine, who announced that 109 schools across Ohio earned the honor this year. The Governor’s Science of Reading Champions Award recognizes schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to using the Science of Reading, an evidence-based approach to teaching literacy.

Governor DeWine said the method has proven to be the most effective way to help children learn to read, calling it engaging for students and impactful in the classroom. State officials say the award highlights schools where educators, administrators, and families are working together to strengthen literacy skills and improve reading outcomes for students.

The Science of Reading Champions Award was first introduced in 2025 as part of the governor’s push to expand evidence-based literacy instruction. Under state policy supported by the Ohio General Assembly, the Science of Reading is now the required literacy instruction method for all Ohio public schools.

This year’s recognition of Dohron Wilson Elementary highlights the work happening locally in Mechanicsburg to support student reading success.
