Urbana’s downtown lost Sicilian-inspired restaurant Eatly on Saturday, Dec. 20, when the eatery served its final meals at 116 Miami Street. Owners say the closure was due to family caregiving needs, as both of Tom Thompson’s parents require full-time care.

Eatly had relocated to Urbana in 2024 from near the Wittenberg University campus in Springfield, where it had grown in popularity during the outdoor dining boom sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic. The restaurant was known for its Italian fare, European-style desserts, and welcoming atmosphere.

Thompson thanked the community for its support over the past year and noted that the new owners of the building “are wonderful people” with exciting plans ahead.

“Goodbye and much love to you,” Thompson wrote on social media, expressing gratitude to patrons and friends.
