An early morning fire severely damaged a home in the 600 block of Florence Avenue in Bellefontaine on Sunday, sending two people to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

According to the Bellefontaine Fire Department, crews were dispatched at 6:23 AM to the scene, where they found a two-story residence fully engulfed in flames.

Due to the intensity of the fire, all off-duty Bellefontaine firefighters were called in, and mutual aid was requested from the Huntsville Volunteer Fire Department.

A male and female occupant were able to escape the home before crews arrived, but were transported to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Officials confirmed that the home had at least one working smoke alarm, which may have helped alert the residents in time.

No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately five hours to fully extinguish the blaze and conduct overhaul operations.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
