Authorities are continuing to work to identify the man who died in Tuesday morning’s fatal house fire at 417 West Brown Avenue in Bellefontaine.

The Logan County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy was performed Wednesday as part of the investigation into the fire. However, due to the condition of the victim’s remains, a positive identification could not be made at this time.

Investigators are now attempting to use fingerprints and, if available, dental records to confirm the victim’s identity. Officials noted that the process could take some time depending on the availability of records.

Fire Chief Brian Wilson previously confirmed that the victim was a man believed to be in his 70s. A woman who was also inside the home when the fire broke out was able to escape unharmed.

The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office continues to assist local authorities in determining the cause of the fire. Once a positive identification is made, the Coroner’s Office will notify Bellefontaine Police Department detectives, and additional information is expected to be released.
