Firefighters contain Urbana house fire on Wednesday morning

Firefighters with the Urbana Fire Division quickly contained a house fire Wednesday morning in the 800 block of Amherst Drive.

Crews were dispatched at approximately 10:59 a.m. and arrived a few minutes later to find smoke coming from the residence. Firefighters launched an interior attack and had water on the fire within minutes. The fire was declared under control at 11:36 a.m.

One occupant was evaluated at the scene for injuries related to the incident.

According to the Urbana Fire Division, the fire was contained to the room where it started, limiting damage to the rest of the home. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and a damage estimate has not yet been released.

Due to the extreme heat, additional firefighters and EMS crews were called to assist. Mutual aid agencies included the West Liberty Fire Department, JSP Fire Department, Mechanicsburg Fire Department, Macochee Joint Ambulance District, Northeast Champaign County Fire District, Box 13, the American Red Cross, and Champaign County Dispatch.
