First responders from across Logan County came together Saturday for an advanced emergency training course called “Care in a Car,” hosted and developed by local instructors.
The full-day training was held at Richland Township Park and brought together 34 participants from several departments.
Crews from the Huntsville Volunteer Fire Department, Bellefontaine Fire Department, BMRT Ambulance District, Richland Township Volunteer Fire Department, Rushcreek Township Volunteer Fire & EMS, the Logan County HazMat Team, and Wayne Township Fire & Rescue were all represented.
The unique training focused on providing emergency medical care in vehicles during active extrications—often one of the most challenging and dangerous situations for first responders.
Topics covered included airway management, C-Spine stabilization, medication administration, and coordination during complex rescue operations.
The morning began with students rotating through hands-on skill stations covering Extrication, HazMat, Scene Size-Up and Command, Vehicle Stabilization, and EMS care.
In the afternoon, crews were divided into scenario-based teams where they applied what they learned in real-time rescue simulations.
A special addition to this year’s training included the donation of a full-sized bus, allowing students to practice extrication techniques in confined spaces and understand the complications of treating and removing multiple patients from a bus crash scenario.
Local instructors who led the training included Brandon Stevens, Jesse Kean, Steven Major, T.J. Weikart, Jon DeCola, Matt Stonerock, Drew Goings, and Robby Weikart—representing both Bellefontaine and Huntsville fire departments as well as the HazMat team.
