From farm to cheese: A visit to Blue Jacket Dairy

There’s always a bit of excitement when I get to step outside the studio and into the community — especially when it means getting to know more about the farmers, producers, and small business owners that keep Logan County growing and thriving.

We’re lucky here.

Agriculture is a major part of Ohio’s economy, and in Logan County, we’ve got a little bit of everything.

That includes family-run dairies, and today, I had the pleasure of meeting with Jim and Angel King, the husband-and-wife team behind Blue Jacket Dairy.

A few weeks back, I stopped by their son’s dairy and quickly realized: the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

He grew up around cows, milk, and hard work — and it’s clear this love for dairy runs deep in the family.

Tucked away on County Road 11 in Bellefontaine, Blue Jacket Dairy is a local gem.

If you blink, you’ll miss it.

Since 2008, Jim and Angel have been turning fresh, local milk into artisan cheeses that are as thoughtful as they are tasty.

Jim brings his lifelong farming background, while Angel draws on her business savvy — together, they’ve built a creamery centered on craftsmanship, tradition, and sustainability.

Their mission is simple: create high-quality, small-batch cheeses that reflect the heart of Ohio’s farming heritage.

Say Cheese: Local Favorites You’ve Gotta Try

Cheese Curds

These are a crowd favorite — and for good reason.

Blue Jacket offers seven flavors, from classic Dill to bold Smokey.

Made with locally sourced milk, they’re packed with flavor and, yes, they’re the same delicious curds you’ve likely tried deep-fried at your favorite restaurant.

Gretna Grillin’

If you’ve never tried a grilling cheese, you’re in for a treat. Gretna Grillin’ is buttery, semi-soft, and doesn’t melt — which means it crisps up beautifully on the grill or in a skillet.

Plus, it’s named after a historic hamlet right here in Logan County.

Quark

Creamy, mild, and totally spreadable, Quark is a European-style cheese that deserves a spot in your fridge.

Perfect on toast, bagels, or in dips, it’s a hidden gem for cream cheese lovers.

Aged Cheese

If you like bold and aged, the Trace cheddar-style cheese is a must-try.

It’s sharp, flavorful, and a great example of Blue Jacket’s ability to blend tradition with innovation.

You can find Blue Jacket Dairy at 1534 County Road 11 in Bellefontaine.

Whether you’re a cheese enthusiast or just looking to support local, it’s worth the trip.

They are supporting so many local farmers, and love sharing their products.

This family-run creamery is a shining example of what makes Logan County special.
