Governor Mike DeWine is encouraging Ohioans to take advantage of this year’s extended holiday, which will run from 12:00 a.m. Friday, August 1, through 11:59 p.m. Thursday, August 14.
The Sales Tax Holiday allows shoppers to purchase qualifying items both in-store and online without paying state sales tax.
The goal: to offer meaningful financial relief for working families, especially ahead of the busy back-to-school season.
“The timing of this year’s sales tax holiday not only supports families preparing for back-to-school, but also provides relief on other important household needs,” said Governor DeWine.
Thanks to changes made in 2024 by Governor DeWine and the Ohio General Assembly, the holiday has been expanded in both length and scope.
What was once a three-day event for school supplies has grown to include a wider range of goods priced up to $500, lasting 14 days.
“Whether it’s back-to-school shopping or everyday essentials, this is an opportunity for Ohioans to get more value for their money,” said Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman.
“It’s the people’s money first,” added Senate President Rob McColley, who called the holiday a “well-earned break” for Ohio taxpayers.
The tax break applies to a broad range of items under $500, but does not apply to:
- Motor vehicles
- Watercraft or outboard motors
- Alcohol, tobacco, or vapor products
- Marijuana or marijuana-containing items
- Services of any kind
Purchases can be made in stores or through online retailers that ship to Ohio.
