Graham BOE to further discuss possible appeal

The Graham Local Schools Board of Education held a special meeting Friday night at Graham High School to discuss whether to appeal a county ruling that blocked the district’s attempt to raise property taxes without voter approval.

The board heard nearly an hour of public comment before entering executive session. After about an hour behind closed doors, the board adjourned without taking any action or providing an explanation.

The issue stems from an Oct. 28 decision by the Champaign County Budget Commission, which voted unanimously to deny Graham’s effort to reclassify millage from an existing levy to generate additional property tax revenue. The commission ruled the district acted outside the valid time frame for such changes.

Graham has since announced another special meeting for today, November 4, at 5 p.m. in the high school media center. The board is again expected to consider whether to authorize litigation and pursue an expedited appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court. The public will have another opportunity to comment before any potential vote.
