This past weekend, the aviation community came together to celebrate the enduring legacy of one of its most cherished figures — Chief Pilot Earl Bennett, on the milestone 50th anniversary of his iconic solo flight to the 1975 Paris Air Show.

The commemorative event, held at Grimes Field in Urbana, paid tribute to Bennett’s remarkable contributions to aviation as Chief Pilot for Grimes Manufacturing Company and longtime Airport Manager of Grimes Field.

Best known for his performances with the Grimes Flying Lab, Bennett became a beloved figure both in the skies and on the ground.

Bennett’s historic journey to Paris in 1975 was the result of months of meticulous preparation and personal sacrifice.

He poured heart and soul into readying the aircraft, often missing family celebrations to focus on the mission — a testament to his dedication and passion for aviation.

The event was not just a remembrance, but a celebration of a man whose legacy still soars high above Grimes Field.
