Heritage Ohio recently hosted its annual awards ceremony on October 15th at the beautiful Canton Palace Theater, part of its annual conference.

The awards celebrate Ohio’s best projects, places, and people who make lasting impacts through historic preservation and community revitalization.

Winners were selected by an independent jury, and this year, the Historic Theatre of the Year award went to none other than the Holland Theatre in Bellefontaine.

Present to receive the award were board member Jason Vogel, board president Kris Swisher, and architect Karen Beasley, who helped oversee the recent marquee restoration that propelled the Holland to winning this category.

“The community support for this project was very impressive to everyone at the awards ceremony,” noted Swisher. “We are so thankful to live in a place where the performing arts are valued.”

The Holland Theatre continues to shine as a symbol of community pride, boasting its iconic vertical blade and grand marquee—restored after more than 75 years.

A remarkable fundraising effort, including support from major donors, small gifts, and even a benefit performance by Dave Chappelle, helped bring the marquee back to life.

Today, it lights up Main Street, reflecting the vibrant spirit of Bellefontaine’s downtown.

The restored 1931 atmospheric theatre now hosts a full calendar of national acts, local performances, and community productions, reclaiming its place as the star of the downtown scene and inspiring generations to come.

Heritage Ohio works to drive economic growth by preserving and revitalizing downtowns and neighborhoods across the state.

As the designated statewide partner with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Heritage Ohio helps communities save the places that matter—building stronger, more connected neighborhoods along the way.
