Five candidates are running for three open seats on the Urbana City School Board in the November 4 election. Three incumbents — Amy Paul, Jim Arter, and Darrell Thomas — are seeking re-election, each bringing decades of experience and community involvement to the race.
Amy Paul is a retired school principal with 37 years in education and a lifelong commitment to student growth and teacher support. She says her focus has always been on creating schools where all children can learn and thrive. If re-elected, Paul plans to continue advocating for academic excellence at all grade levels, safe and welcoming school environments, and open communication between schools, families, and the community. She also emphasizes the importance of responsible budgeting and transparency in district decisions.
Darrell Thomas has served on the Urbana board for nine years, including multiple terms as president and vice president. With 27 years of leadership experience and a career as a production manager at Honda, he brings both organizational and financial expertise to the board. Thomas has also represented Urbana at the state and national level through the Ohio School Boards Association, advocating for school safety, policy improvements, and fair funding. He says he remains committed to strong, student-centered leadership and ensuring every decision supports the long-term success of Urbana students.
Jim Arter brings 35 years of teaching experience and 16 years on the school board. A longtime educator, coach, and curriculum leader, Arter says his work has always centered on doing what’s best for students. He hopes to continue strengthening academic and extracurricular programs that give every child a chance to succeed. Arter believes in listening to parents and staff, encouraging respectful dialogue, and maintaining high standards in both academics and character development across the district.
The three incumbents will be running against Drew Sponheim and Nate Long.
Voters will decide on November 4 who will fill the three seats on the Urbana City School Board.
