An award-winning documentary by an Indian Lake High School graduate is coming to Bellefontaine.

World Without Cows will be shown at Bellefontaine Cinema 8 on East Sandusky Avenue on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The screening is part of a theatrical release tour following premiere events in Dublin, London, Los Angeles, and New York.

The film explores the role cows play in food production, agriculture, the environment, and human health.

Filmmakers spent five years traveling to 22 countries across five continents, interviewing farmers, ranchers, scientists and environmental experts.

The documentary examines how cattle affect food systems, biodiversity, economies and communities around the world, while exploring how a growing population can be fed without exhausting the planet’s resources.

The film was directed by award-winning journalists Michelle Michael and Brandon Whitworth.

The duo stopped by WPKO studios for an interview Tuesday:

For Michael, the Ohio screenings have a personal connection.

She grew up in the area and graduated from Indian Lake High School in 1997 before earning a journalism degree from Ohio University in 2001.

Many residents may remember her as Misty Kimbler.

Now known professionally as Michelle Michael-Friedel, she says bringing the documentary to Bellefontaine is especially meaningful because of the community that helped shape her.

Michael says she hopes to see familiar faces at the screening, including former classmates, teachers, neighbors, friends, and fellow Lakers.

World Without Cows runs 81 minutes.
