Indian Lake Schools to See Possible Levy

The Indian Lake Board of Education met in regular session Tuesday evening.

At the top of the agenda, Dr. Rob Underwood presented a 2023-2024 staff-approved school calendar. The calendar includes a later-than-usual start date of August 30, 2023, due to an HVAC project at the high school, and a different day for graduation. Once the calendar is approved the graduation date for 2024 will be set to Friday, May 24, 2024, a change from a traditional Sunday date.

Dr. Underwood explains the change:

Next up on the agenda was the discussion of putting a renewal levy on an upcoming ballot. The 2018 tax levy is set to expire and the board is looking to renew that levy. The school is not asking to increase any funds received from taxpayers, but rather to just maintain the income they have coming in from the previous levy. The BOE voted to postpone further discussion until the May 2023 board meeting.

Dr. Underwood explains the levy and the BOE’s plans:

The BOE also heard an update from the Director of Food Services, Brenda Oda. Oda informed the BOE that she and her staff serve 396 students breakfast and 897 lunch each day. Oda says that compared to the last school year, these numbers have largely decreased, mostly due to students being required to purchase meals. The IL Food Services continues to try to move with food trends and notes when items sell in larger quantities while complying with state food standards. The BOE thanked Oda and her staff for their hard work and dedication to the students.

The next Indian Lake Board of Education meeting is set for February 21st at 6:30 PM in the BOE office.
