Indian Lake High School students recently received an important lesson in road safety from School Resource Officer JR Brenner.
Brenner, a Washington Township Police Officer on special assignment at Indian Lake Schools, is a former deputy of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and an Indian Lake alumnus.
He is making it his mission to prepare students for real-life situations involving law enforcement.
During a short information session with upperclassmen, SRO Brenner covered the steps students should take if they are involved in a minor automobile accident.
He emphasized the importance of staying calm, stopping immediately, turning on hazard lights, and only moving the vehicle if absolutely necessary. Students were advised to call 911 and report the incident to police.
Brenner reminded students to always keep a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance in their car, either on paper or as a screenshot on their phone.
He also explained the protocol for accidents on school property, including notifying school administrators and the SRO.
Additionally, with deer season in full swing, Brenner discussed how to safely handle collisions with animals.
He stressed that drivers should never swerve off the road or into another lane to avoid a deer and should alert police to obtain a report number for insurance purposes.
Earlier this week, Brenner held a similar session for freshmen and sophomores.
He plans to continue offering these short, practical lessons to help students navigate potential encounters with law enforcement safely and responsibly.
Reflecting on his work at Indian Lake, Brenner said, “I never thought I’d be working in this kind of environment, and I truly love every part of it!”
