An Indian Lake student was left on a bus Tuesday.

In a release put out by Indian Lake Superintendent Dr. Rob Underwood, the student did not get off the bus at the school.

The child remained on the bus after the route was complete.

Underwood stated after the child did not arrive at school, an investigation took place and they located the student still on the bus.

The student was then taken to school and was later picked up by a parent.

“The health and safety of our students and our staff is the top priority of the District,” said Underwood. “We learned today (Tuesday) of a situation that compromised one of our students and it is unacceptable.”

Superintendent Underwood stated in the press release that the staff member involved is going through the disciplinary process and the situation is taken very seriously.

The staff member has resigned.

Washington Township Police Chief Michael Thompson released a statement saying “We commend the Indian Lake School Administration for their handling of the situation yesterday where a student was left on the bus after the route was complete. The administration was immediately in touch with our agency and responded appropriately. Due to seriousness of the situation, our agency immediately began an investigation into the matter. As a result of our investigation, the staff member was criminally charged.”

Here is the full statement from Superintendent Underwood:

Indian Lake School District Parents and Guardians,

The health and safety of our students and our staff is the top priority of the District. We learned today of a situation that compromised one of our students and it is unacceptable.

A student who rides one of our buses did not get off the bus at the school. While we are still gathering facts, we learned that the child remained on the bus after the route was over.  After the child did not arrive at school, an investigation took place and the child was located still on the bus. The child was then taken to the school and later picked up by a parent.

I have spoken with the child’s family. I can report to you that this staff member has resigned and charges are pending.

We take this situation very seriously. Our staff member did not meet our expectations and it is unacceptable. We will work to do better.

Thank you,

Dr. Rob Underwood

Indian Lake Schools Superintendent
