On Wednesday evening, outside of Lakeview, Logan County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle on US 33 for speeding at 62 mph in a 55 mph zone.

The driver, Russell L. McCoy, 51, from Indiana, increased his speed to 76 mph before eventually pulling into a driveway after a delay.

Deputies noticed McCoy was very nervous and detected a strong smell of burnt marijuana coming from the car.

When asked about guns, McCoy denied having any and admitted he didn’t have a driver’s license, only a state ID.

He consented to a search of the vehicle, which revealed a shopping bag with three prescription bottles that had no labels.

One bottle contained two plastic baggies with a white crystal substance, later confirmed to be methamphetamine.

After finding the drugs, McCoy was handcuffed.

Deputies also discovered a black Taurus gun case inside the vehicle, containing two handguns: a Taurus 9mm and a Taurus Spectrum .380.

The .380 had a loaded magazine, while the 9mm had two loaded magazines but was not loaded.

A box of 9mm ammunition was found in the trunk, along with a glass pipe used for smoking meth.

McCoy has a significant criminal history, including past drug and weapon charges.

He was taken to the Logan County Jail, where tests showed the drugs weighed about 7.07 grams.

He faces charges of Aggravated Possession of Drugs, along with additional charges of Improperly Handling Firearms in a Motor Vehicle and Having Weapons While Under Disability.
