An inmate at the Tri-County Regional Jail is facing multiple charges following an assault involving another inmate Sunday afternoon, according to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies with the Tri-County Regional Jail and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident on Sunday, January 4, at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Authorities say Vincent Kirkmeyer, 20, of Urbana, allegedly assaulted 62-year-old Phillip Mason of Delaware, OH, another inmate at the facility.
Reports indicate Kirkmeyer used a homemade weapon during the attack.
Kirkmeyer is now facing charges of assault and possession of a deadly weapon.
Kirkmeyer was already in custody at the time of the incident following an October arrest after deputies responded to reports of a man breaking windows and attempting to enter a home on Springfield-Urbana Pike.
He was charged in that case with theft, burglary, criminal damaging, and aggravated trespass.
The jail assault remains under investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office. No additional details have been released.
