At a recent Urbana Lions Club meeting, Ken McCabe, a representative of the Champaign County Shooting Academy, shared insights into the organization’s mission and programs. Established as a non-profit in 2018, the Academy serves as an umbrella for various shooting-sports programs in the region. With all instructors certified and actively training new NRA instructors, the Academy stands out as a premier resource for shooting education and safety.
The Champaign County Shooting Academy offers a range of facilities and programs that welcome the public. Their public shooting platform and archery range are open to everyone, with donations appreciated to support upkeep and development. The Academy holds a 10-year lease with the Champaign County Commissioners for a 20-acre 3D archery course, used extensively for training and competitions.
Support from major organizations such as KTH, Friends of NRA, Whitetails Unlimited, Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration, and Western Ohio Personal Safety helps sustain the Academy’s efforts. Located on East US 36, the air gun and archery range features indoor and outdoor ranges, plus a state-of-the-art video simulator.
The Academy is deeply rooted in community outreach. It founded the Champaign County 4-H Shooting Sports program 25 years ago, engaging youth ages 8 to 18 in safe, educational shooting activities. The annual Women-On-Target clinic, now in its 13th year, encourages women of all experience levels to learn and enjoy shooting sports. Another highlight is the May Family Archery Day, an introductory event designed for families to explore archery together.
Additionally, the Academy partners with the Dayton VA to offer adapted shooting programs tailored for veterans, enhancing rehabilitation and recreation. They have also previously hosted archery clinics for the Ohio State School for the Blind, demonstrating a commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
Ken McCabe and the Champaign County Shooting Academy continue to foster safe, skill-building, and inclusive environments for shooting sports enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds.
