For the second year in a row, the top speller at Indian Lake Middle School is 8th grader Grace Johnson.
After 18 rounds of intense competition, Johnson spelled “intubated” to become the champion. She also won the Bee last year.
5th grader Starr Leonhart took the runner-up spot.
In total, 20 other students who were all chosen from Language Arts classes, participated in the bee.
Students were provided spelling words from the Scripps National Spelling Bee List.
Johnson and Leonhart will advance to the Logan County Spelling Bee in January at the Holland Theatre.
Johnson becomes the first ILMS student in recent years to win the Spelling Bee in back-to-back years.
