Logan County Common Pleas Judge Kevin Braig is alerting residents about a series of fraudulent phone calls that have recently surfaced in the area.
The scam involves callers claiming that a family member of the person they’ve reached is being held in the Logan County Jail on felony charges.
The callers then demand payment for bail or for an electronic monitor, supposedly needed for release.
Judge Braig stressed that these calls are not legitimate.
“Neither the Court’s staff nor any member of any other branch of law enforcement ever calls anyboby to secure bail or pay for an electronic monitor as a condition of bail,” he said.
Bail in felony cases is set only during hearings at the Logan County Courthouse.
He also noted that when an electronic monitor is ordered as a bail condition, the cost is covered by state funding, not by families.
As previously reported, similar telecommunication scams have been reported in Champaign County.
Judge Braig is urging residents who receive suspicious calls about bail, electronic monitors, or jail inmates to report them directly to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.
