Juneteenth observed Thursday — Garbage pickup continues as usual

Thursday is Juneteenth, the newest federal holiday—and a powerful reminder of freedom, progress, and the work still ahead.

The holiday marks June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and finally told enslaved African Americans they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed.

While Black communities have honored the day for generations, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed it into law.

Across the country—and right here at home—people are coming together for events that highlight Black history and culture.

A quick reminder for residents: Most government offices, banks, and many businesses are closed today.

However, garbage and recycling pickup are running on schedule.
