Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds announced Thursday that K-9 Officer Thor will be retiring from duty next week.

In a video announcement released on social media, Sheriff Dodds said that Deputy Cole Piatt is leaving the Sheriff’s Office to take a position with another law enforcement agency.

Piatt has been with the Sheriff’s Office for the last six years.

Sheriff Dodds thanked Piatt for his service and said he was honest, thorough and dedicated to the job.  His final day will be April 19th.

Deputy Piatt is also the handler for K-9 Thor.

Sheriff Dodds consulted with experts on options now that Thor’s handler is leaving.

Thor could train with a new deputy, but the bond Thor has with Piatt and the fact that Thor is 5 years old would make this option difficult.  Most police dogs retire around age 7 or 8.

Sheriff’s Dodds said the best option is to retire Thor from service and search for a new handler and K-9.

Dodds feels a K-9 officer plays a vital role at the Sheriff’s Office in not only catching criminals but for community outreach.

The Sheriffs hopes to have a new K-9 and handler in the near future.

Thor will retire and live with Deputy Piatt who has agreed to purchase his K-9 partner.

We thank Deputy Cole Piatt and K-9 Officer Thor for their service.
