The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is inviting Ohioans to start 2026 with adventure, inspiration, and fresh air during its annual First Day Hikes program.

This New Year’s Day tradition offers a healthy, energizing way to begin the year with guided hikes at state parks and nature preserves across Ohio.

“First Day hikes are a simple but meaningful way to begin the year with clarity, connection, and purpose,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “Whether you’re stepping onto a trail for the first time or returning to a favorite path, Ohio’s state parks and nature preserves offer a place to reset and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.”

This year, guided hikes will take place at 15 state parks and one state nature preserve, featuring everything from lakeside paths to quiet woodland trails.

Naturalists will lead the hikes and share ecological, historical, and cultural stories unique to each site.

One highlight for local participants is the Indian Lake First Day Hike:

  • Date & Time: Thursday, January 1, 2026 | 1:00 PM – 1:45 PM
  • Location: Pew Island Trail Head, 10160 Co Rd 286, Huntsville, OH 43324 (Crane Town Pew Island)
  • Details: Join a naturalist for a short 0.8-mile walk around Pew Island. Dress appropriately for the weather. Pets are welcome but must be leashed. Only extreme cold or heavy rain will cancel the event. Participants will receive a commemorative Winter Hike series sticker while supplies last.

The hikes are family-friendly and open to all experience levels, offering an opportunity to enjoy Ohio’s natural beauty while connecting with friends, family, and community.

Ohio’s First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative, with more than 1,000 hikes held across all 50 states, encouraging millions over the past three decades to embrace outdoor recreation on New Year’s Day.

Hikers are encouraged to dress in layers, protect exposed skin, and bring water and snacks.

For safety, let someone know your plans before heading out, and visit the ODNR website for winter trail tips and details on each hike by searching “First Day Hike” on the events page.
