The Bellefontaine Kiwanis Club welcomed guest speaker Nick Davis, representative for Senator Bernie Moreno, during its Thursday, November 13 meeting at the Harold Kerr American Legion Post #173.
Davis provided an overview of the recent government shutdown, which ended on Wednesday, November 12, after forty-three days.
The shutdown was the longest in U.S. history and concluded with the passage of a bill in both the Senate and House, signed into law by President Donald Trump.
The legislation included a clean Continuing Resolution funding the government through January 30, reversal of all workforce reductions since October 1, and a commitment to a future vote on a one-year extension of expiring COVID-era health care subsidies.
The bill also included a three-bill minibus covering Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, the Legislative Branch, and funding for SNAP and WIC programs through September 30, 2026.
Senator Moreno secured multiple agriculture-related projects benefiting Ohio.
Davis also highlighted the One Big Beautiful Bill, passed and signed on July 4, which eliminated federal taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits, provided historic tax cuts for middle- and working-class families, permanently increased the Child Tax Credit, created investment accounts for newborns, strengthened Medicaid integrity, and included major border, energy, and national security provisions.
Additional legislative priorities discussed included:
- Transportation Freedom Act – reducing vehicle costs and eliminating certain federal mandates
- Rules Act (Asylum Reform) – limiting asylum claims to legal ports of entry
- Public Safety Legislation – including the Larry Henderson Act and the STOP Act
- Protecting American Workers – via the Safe Hire Act and the HIRE Act
Senator Moreno currently serves as Deputy Whip, a role he attained in recognition of his work on these legislative efforts.
