The Lakeview Village Council got its first look at the architectural drawings of the new village building in its meeting Monday night. The drawings, provided by Beasley Architecture and Design, were given to Village Administrator Dave Scott so he could provide more information about drain elevation in the construction area.

Zoning Officer Gary Bias told the council that he made 110 contacts in March. He also granted five building permits, including two for single-family dwellings. He also informed the council that the new zoning map has been completed and is now on display at the temporary village office. He also recommended that meetings for the Zoning Appeals Board and Planning Commission.

Village Administrator Scott requested the council to authorize posting for an additional Water and Street Department worker. He said since the tornado, his department is down three employees. The council approved the posting.

Scott also said that the village’s insurance carrier recommended that the village pay for the removal of the fire department antenna that was damaged during recent bad weather. Since the village has had several claims, including a $15,000 claim for replacing a broken water plant ladder, the relative minor cost to the village  for removing the antenna would save the village from possible rate hikes. The council approved paying for the removal of the damaged antenna.

Scott updated the council on the Midway water line replacement. Scott said that he expects digging for one more section of the eater system, possibly impacting US Route 33. He said that there are three 100-year-old water supply mains that need to be replaced.

Fire Chief Joe Ferryman introduced fire fighter Derek Thurman of Jackson Center to the council and asked them to approve his hiring, bringing the department to 17 firefighters. The council approved the hire.

He also updated the council on his search for a replacement truck for the ladder truck that was damaged during the tornado response. He said he is looking at a pumper/rescue engine from a department  in Pennsylvania. He also said the $170,000 price was negotiable. Additionally, he is looking for a new pumper truck. Ferryman said that he will be seeking grants to offset the cost for the trucks.

In her report to the council, Mayor Elaine Fagan-Moore said the Seniors Helping Seniors program will be held on May 19. The program, started last year by Fagan-Moore, allows graduating seniors to perform service hours that are needed for graduation. She said she has been working with Indian Lake Superintendent Rob Underwood and the principals of the three schools to organize the event.

Last year, approximately 14 students, along with village officials, helped two village residents with landscaping and small odd jobs around their homes. This year, she expects to have closer to 20 students. Mayor Fagan-Moore talks about the program:

Nominations are being accepted at the village offices, and the selection will be in the next few weeks.

The next Lakeview Village Council meetingwill be held Monday, May 4, 2026 at 6:00 PM. The meeting is open to the public.
