A 34-year-old Marion man was arrested early Saturday morning after a domestic dispute in Lakeview escalated into a confrontation with deputies and a brief escape attempt.
Deputies with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call just after 1 AM to a home on Byers Street.
When they arrived, they found several people outside a neighboring residence.
One of them, identified as Benjamin Hood, 34, of Marion, Ohio, told deputies he had gotten into a verbal argument with his girlfriend and left their home to defuse the situation.
He said she followed him, demanding the return of her phone, and struck him during the encounter.
Deputies noticed scratch marks on Hood’s neck.
Hood also claimed that the woman’s adult son arrived at the scene carrying a hatchet and threatened him.
However, no weapon was found, and witnesses stated they did not observe any such threat or attempt to cause harm.
When deputies spoke with the woman involved, she had visible swelling on her face and scratches on her wrist.
She said Hood had grabbed her during the argument and threw objects in their bedroom, including a small cast iron skillet.
She also said Hood punched and broke her television and made several threats.
As officers attempted to arrest Hood, he resisted and tried to flee by jumping off the porch.
Deputies were able to detain him and place him in handcuffs.
While in the back of the patrol vehicle, Hood managed to move his handcuffs to the front, force open the interior divider, and exit through the front passenger door, fleeing the scene on foot.
Deputies chased him and repeatedly ordered him to stop.
A taser was deployed during the pursuit, and Hood was taken into custody after falling to the ground.
He was evaluated by EMS on the scene and cleared of any injuries.
Hood was transported to the Logan County Jail on charges of domestic violence, resisting arrest, and obstructing official business.
