Local parks across Ohio will soon see major upgrades — including new splashpads, basketball courts, playgrounds, and walking trails — thanks to more than $2.9 million in funding awarded through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) NatureWorks grant program.

A total of 76 projects in 64 counties will receive funding aimed at improving outdoor recreation opportunities statewide.

“We take pride in our parks because they are an important central gathering place in our local communities,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “We hope the projects funded by these grants will encourage more Ohioans to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family.”

Communities receiving grants will use the funds to purchase new parkland, build or renovate playgrounds, add sports courts such as pickleball and basketball, and construct amenities like pavilions, restrooms, lighting, parking areas, and accessible trails.

Locally, Logan County was awarded funding for improvements at Lakeview Park in the Village of Lakeview.

The project includes replacing bleachers, adding a storage building, installing new security lighting, and upgrading fencing.

The village will receive $20,796 for the improvements.

“We want Ohioans to be able to discover an amazing park in their own backyard, and that’s why we support our local parks,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “These grants allow communities to grow their love of nature and exploration.”

The NatureWorks program provides up to 75% reimbursement to local governments — including townships, villages, cities, counties, and park districts — for acquiring, developing, or improving recreational spaces.

The grants are funded through the Ohio Parks and Natural Resources Bond Issue, approved by Ohio voters in 1993, along with subsequent supporting legislation.
