West Liberty resident Larry Lance was given a flag Thursday by the Logan County Commissioners.

The flag was in honor of Lance’s long-time service to his country and his community.

Lance was in the U.S. Navy and is a Vietnam veteran.

He was stationed on the USS America at Norfolk, Virginia, and was honorably discharged in 1970 as a 3rd class Boilerman.

He received numerous awards for his service including the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

A few years after leaving the Navy, Lance entered the Ohio National Guard.  He did 12 years in the National Guard leaving with the rank of staff sergeant.

Lance said being in the military “was a lovely way to see the world”.

He recalled stops in Istanbul, Turkey, Japan, and two tours to Vietnam.

Larry is also a servant to his community.  In 1975, he went to EMT school and joined the West Liberty squad where he served for several years.  He taught CPR for 40 years.  He was a member of the West Liberty village council (including the past president), and he is a Mason.

Lance worked for the Logan County Veterans Office for 12 years retiring in 2014.

He went on the first Logan County Vets to D.C. trip and continues to help with the annual outing for Logan County veterans.

He and his wife, Norma, have been married for 40 years.

Lance’s flag was one that has flown at the top of the Logan County Courthouse.
