Hughes apprehended downtown Bellefontaine

On Monday, February 3, shortly after 1 pm, Bellefontaine Police were dispatched to the downtown area of North Main Street and West Columbus Avenue about a male with a gun.

Upon arrival, Officers found that Derek B. Hughes of Bellefontaine, had approached a victim, and the situation escalated into an argument.

Hughes then assaulted the victim. The victim, a concealed weapons holder, then drew their firearm, and Hughes fled only to be apprehended by officers a short time later.

Hughes was lodged in the Logan County Jail for criminal charges of assault.

It is suspected that he may have been suffering from a mental health crisis and there is no connection between him and the victim.

The victim will not face any criminal charges.
