Logan County’s Beggars Night is Thursday from 6-8 PM.

This year, it’s more important than ever to consider safety when choosing costumes and participating in trick-or-treating activities.

Here are some essential tips to ensure a fun and safe experience for your little ones:

Costume Safety

1. Choose Fire-Resistant Materials: When selecting costumes, wigs, and accessories, ensure they are made of fire-resistant fabrics. Always check the labels to keep your child safe while they enjoy their spooky attire.

2. Avoid Dangerous Props: Costume accessories like swords or wands can lead to unintentional injuries. Opt for soft and pliable materials, such as foam, to minimize the risk of accidents during play.

3. Use Non-Toxic Face Paint: Not all face paints are safe. Look for non-toxic options to protect your child’s skin while completing their Halloween look.

4. Incorporate Reflective Tape: Adding reflective tape to costumes can help increase visibility, making children more noticeable to drivers while they’re out trick-or-treating.

Chief Deputy Joe Kopus of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office has tips:

Bellefontaine Police Chief Chris Marlow:

Trick-or-Treating Safety

1. Ensure Adult Supervision: Children should always be accompanied by an adult during trick-or-treating. This helps keep them safe and provides peace of mind for parents.

2. Stick to Familiar Surroundings: It’s best to stick to neighborhoods you know. If you want to explore new areas, consider visiting them in advance to familiarize yourself with the environment.

3. Make a Plan: For older kids going out alone, establish a planned route and set check-in times. This helps maintain communication and ensures their safety.

4. Discuss Stranger Danger: Remind children never to enter a stranger’s home or vehicle, even if they’re tempted by candy.

5. Save Eating Candy for Home: Encourage kids to wait until they return home to enjoy their treats. This allows parents to inspect the candy for safety and help manage consumption.

6. Stay Aware of Surroundings: Teach children to stay vigilant while walking. Remind them to look both ways when crossing streets and to be cautious of their surroundings.

7. It’s Okay to Discard Candy: If any candy appears opened or tampered with, throw it away. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to safety.

By following these tips, families can ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone.
