Listen Up! is a weekly public affairs show where we talk about topics here in our county, and beyond.

This week Todd Bumgardner explains all things recycling, what services are available in Logan County, and where you can take your recyclable items:

The Logan County Solid Waste District is committed to promoting sustainability in the community through its dual-stream recycling program and Zero Waste philosophy.

Operating under a dual-stream system, the district accepts both fiber and household containers at its 16 recycling centers and through the City of Bellefontaine’s Curbside Recycling Program.

This system allows residents to drop off items like newspapers, cereal boxes, glass bottles, plastic bottles, and metal cans, with the added benefit of hand-sorting to ensure proper recycling practices.

Zero Waste is a philosophy that the district embraces, combining resource utilization and product design with a focus on the entire life cycle of products and services.

The goal is to reduce waste at its source, maximize recycling and reuse, and minimize landfill contributions.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to follow proper recycling practices to reduce contamination and maximize the program’s effectiveness.

Recycling at Your Business, School, or Event

Interest in recycling is growing rapidly in Logan County, and the Solid Waste District is ready to help businesses, schools, and event organizers develop tailored recycling programs.

Whether you’re looking to start a recycling program at your business, school, church, or recreational park, the district offers consultation services to help you plan and implement a system that fits your specific needs.

Businesses can benefit from incorporating recycling into their operations by reducing waste and enhancing sustainability.

Additionally, the district offers guidance on Zero Waste and composting to help businesses reduce their environmental footprint even further.

Schools and community organizations can also get assistance in developing recycling programs that encourage sustainability among students and staff.

For large-scale public events, the district provides Clearstream Recycling Containers that are portable, easy to set up, and designed to promote recycling while minimizing contamination.

The transparent containers help ensure only recyclables are placed inside, reducing waste and helping to make events more sustainable.

The district can also assist with transportation, training, and volunteer support for events to make recycling easier and more effective.

Proper Recycling Practices

While recycling is an essential part of waste management, the Solid Waste District emphasizes that proper sorting is key.

Items must be clean, dry, and free of food residue.

Common mistakes include “wish cycling,” where individuals drop off items they think are recyclable but are not accepted at the Bellefontaine facility.

These items may include vinyl siding, Rubbermaid totes, and large plastic items like swimming pools.

Coordinator Angel Payne encourages residents to check whether an item is recyclable before dropping it off.

The district urges people to follow these guidelines:

  • Rinse cans, bottles, and containers
  • Empty and flatten cardboard boxes
  • Only recycle plastic bags and films at the center on South Detroit Street
  • Take scrap metal to a scrap yard or bring it inside as a donation
  • Place food items in a green PAYT trash bag

For more information or assistance with recycling, Zero Waste, or composting programs, residents, businesses, schools, and event organizers are encouraged to contact the Logan County Solid Waste District.

The drop-off center is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at 1100 South Detroit Street in Bellefontaine.

You can also call the district at (937) 599-1253 to discuss tailored recycling options for your needs.

By working together, we can make Logan County more sustainable and reduce waste, one recycled item at a time.
