“Listen Up!” is a weekly public affairs show that explores topics affecting Logan County and beyond.

This week, Todd Bumgardner takes a deep dive into recycling—what services are available in our community and where you can take your recyclable items.

The Logan County Solid Waste District is dedicated to promoting sustainability through its dual-stream recycling program and Zero Waste philosophy.

Under the dual-stream system, residents can drop off fiber items like newspapers and cereal boxes, as well as household containers such as glass bottles, plastic bottles, and metal cans.

These can be taken to one of the district’s 16 recycling centers or through the City of Bellefontaine’s Curbside Recycling Program, where hand-sorting ensures proper recycling.

The district’s Zero Waste approach focuses on reducing waste at its source, maximizing recycling and reuse, and minimizing landfill contributions.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to follow proper recycling practices to reduce contamination and make the system more effective.

Composting in Logan County

Composting is available at the Bellefontaine location on South Detroit Street, the West Liberty Recycling Center, the Lakeview Recycling Center, and the Health Department downtown in Bellefontaine.

  • Avoid non-compostable contamination—do not place plastic bags or other non-compostable containers in compost carts, as this greatly hampers the process.
  • Close cart lids completely to keep the station tidy and prevent issues.
  • Enjoy the process! Share your composting experience with friends and on social media, and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or ideas.

Recycling at Your Business, School, or Event

Interest in recycling is growing across Logan County.

The Solid Waste District offers support to businesses, schools, and event organizers to develop recycling programs tailored to their needs.

  • Businesses can reduce waste, improve sustainability, and get guidance on Zero Waste and composting practices.
  • Schools and community organizations can implement programs that engage students and staff in sustainability efforts.
  • Public events can use the district’s Clearstream Recycling Containers—transparent, portable bins that help minimize contamination and encourage proper recycling.

The district also offers help with transportation, volunteer support, and training for events to make recycling easier and more effective.

Proper Recycling Practices

Proper sorting is essential.

Items should be clean, dry, and free of food residue.

Common mistakes include “wish cycling”—placing non-recyclable items in bins, like vinyl siding, Rubbermaid totes, or large plastics such as swimming pools.

Residents are encouraged to check whether an item is accepted before dropping it off.

Key tips include:

  • Rinse cans, bottles, and containers
  • Flatten cardboard boxes
  • Recycle plastic bags and films only at the center on South Detroit Street
  • Take scrap metal to a scrap yard or donate it
  • Place food items in a green PAYT trash bag

The Logan County Solid Waste District is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 1100 South Detroit Street in Bellefontaine.

Residents, businesses, schools, and event organizers can call (937) 599-1253 for more information or tailored recycling and composting options.

By working together, Logan County can become more sustainable—one recycled or composted item at a time.
