A Bellefontaine man was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI) late Thursday night after a traffic stop revealed signs of impairment.

An officer on patrol saw a Harley Davidson motorcycle accelerating recklessly while turning onto West Brown Avenue from North Detroit Street.

After catching up with the motorcycle on North Main Street, the officer initiated a traffic stop.

Upon approaching the motorcycle, the officer identified the driver as 41-year-old Tommy Hoskins, of Bellefontaine, who showed several signs of intoxication.

Hoskins claimed he was on his way home from a friend’s house and repeatedly apologized for his driving.

It was found that Hoskins was operating the motorcycle with only a temporary permit, which prohibits riding at night.

The officer noted a strong odor of alcoholic drinks and conducted several field sobriety tests.

Hoskins denied drinking alcohol but later admitted he hadn’t had “enough not to ride home.”

Despite the officer’s request for a breath test, Hoskins refused and instead was taken into custody.

A subsequent check of his driving record showed multiple previous OVI convictions.

After securing a warrant, officers transported Hoskins to Mary Rutan Hospital for a blood draw, which will be analyzed for alcohol content.

He has been booked into the Logan County Jail and faces charges for OVI and related offenses.
