Local officials warn community about ongoing phone scams

Residents are being urged to remain vigilant after officials reported continued scam calls and fraudulent messages targeting members of the community.

According to representatives from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, multiple individuals have recently reported suspicious phone calls in which scammers falsely claimed to represent the office.

In one reported incident, a caller identified himself as a member of the office and stated it was “very important” that the recipient return the call regarding an urgent matter. The phone number appeared to be non-local and may have been spoofed to appear legitimate. The resident did not return the call and instead contacted the office directly to verify the claim — which officials say was the correct response.

Authorities say they have also received reports of scams involving:

  • Claims of missed jury duty

  • Calls referencing alleged federal court issues

  • Threats of arrest or legal consequences

Officials emphasize several key reminders for the public:

  • The office will not call demanding immediate action, payment, or personal information.

  • Law enforcement will not threaten arrest or legal action over the phone.

  • Legitimate court or jury matters are handled through official written notice — not urgent phone calls.

Scammers often use intimidation tactics, urgency, and spoofed phone numbers to pressure individuals into responding quickly without verifying information.

Residents who receive suspicious calls or messages are advised not to respond. Instead, hang up and contact the office directly using a known, verified phone number.

Officials stress that slowing down and verifying information can prevent financial loss and identity theft. Reporting scam attempts also helps protect others in the community by allowing authorities to track patterns and issue timely warnings.
