Local police are warning residents to be on the lookout for a new text message scam impersonating the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

Many residents have reported receiving fraudulent messages claiming to be a “final notice” from the Ohio BMV.

The message falsely states that recipients have an unpaid traffic ticket and warns of enforcement penalties beginning June 10, 2025.

The scam text reads:

“Ohio State Department of Motor Vehicles (BMV) Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin on June 10. Our records show that as of today, you still have an outstanding traffic ticket. In accordance with Ohio State Administrative Code 15C-16.003, if you do not complete payment by June 10, 2025, we will take the following actions:

  1. Report to the DMV violation database
  2. Suspend your vehicle registration starting June 10
  3. Suspend driving privileges for 30 days
  4. Transfer to a toll booth and charge a 35% service fee
  5. You may be prosecuted, and your credit score will be affected

Russells Point Police Chief Joe Freyhof says,

“This is another example of attempted fraud. Please inform your friends and neighbors, and don’t hesitate to ask if you’re simply not sure. The goal is to scare you and create a sense of urgency. Stay alert and stay safe!”

Government agencies like the BMV do not send payment requests via text with threatening language or suspicious links.

If you receive a message like this, do not click the link or respond.

Instead, report it to local law enforcement or the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
