The Logan County Democratic Party has partnered with Miami Valley Medical Debt Relief to help local families eliminate medical debt.
The initiative aims to raise $5,000, which organizers say could be leveraged to forgive more than $700,000 in outstanding medical bills for families across the county.
“Medical debt is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. It traps families in cycles of poverty, stress, and impossible choices,” the group said. “But together, we can help break that cycle.”
Contributions to the initiative are reportedly multiplied 100 times through the nonprofit partnership.
That means a $100 donation could erase $10,000 in debt, and a $25 donation could erase $2,500.
Sue Neer, leader of the Logan County Democrats, said the project is about addressing past harm caused by predatory healthcare practices.
“We want to make a difference in healing those past harms,” Neer said. “Help us collect donations today to buy back and forgive thousands of dollars of medical debt that Logan County residents have faced.”
