The Logan County Jail opened its doors Friday afternoon for a special lunch celebrating the harvest from the jail’s garden.

Jail Administrator Tim Klingelhofer and Sheriff Randy Dodds welcomed guests to enjoy a meal that highlighted the hard work of inmates who helped grow and prepare the food.

Klingelhofer talks about this year’s harvest and jail renovations in 2025:

The garden, located on the jail property, produced an impressive variety of fruits, vegetables, and poultry this year, including:

  • Zucchini
  • Cucumbers
  • Peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Squash
  • Watermelon
  • Pumpkins
  • Green beans
  • Sweet corn
  • Potatoes
  • Onions
  • Carrots
  • Chicken
  • Eggs

The meal was prepared by inmates using the garden’s fresh ingredients.

Staff Sergeant of Corrections Joe Torsell manned the grill, serving up hamburgers, brats, and jail-grown chicken.

As conversation and laughter filled the afternoon, the event showcased how the jail’s garden program continues to bring the community together.

The jail credited several local businesses and organizations for contributing to the success of this year’s garden, including:

  • Hillside Greenhouse
  • Tim Hart and A&H Hose
  • Family Farm and Home
  • Comptons
  • Caven’s Meats
  • Sunrise Meadows
  • Recovery Zone
  • Bellefontaine Municipal Court

Attendees also had the opportunity to tour the Logan County Jail and see some of the facility’s recent upgrades.

Sheriff Dodds said the annual tradition serves as a reminder of how community support and inmate rehabilitation can go hand-in-hand, and he expects the event to continue for many years to come.
