The Logan County Commissioners are excited to announce plans for a new animal shelter designed to provide a safe haven for lost and abandoned animals in the community.

The proposed facility will be constructed on the grounds of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and is set to address the needs of both pets and livestock involved in legal cases.

The planned shelter will encompass approximately 8,400 square feet and feature a range of specialized areas to support animal care.

Key components of the design include:

23 Individual Dog Kennels: Each kennel will have access to an outdoor dog run area, providing fresh air and exercise. The facility will also offer separate sections for smaller and larger dogs.
Cat Area: A designated space will be set aside exclusively for cats, ensuring they have a comfortable environment away from the dog kennels.
Livestock Housing: The shelter will include a section for the temporary housing of livestock involved in legal cases such as abuse or abandonment.
Visitor Spaces: Potential adopters will have dedicated areas to meet and interact with animals they are considering for adoption.
Grooming, Quarantine, and Veterinary Rooms: The design includes facilities for grooming, medical care, and recovery to ensure the well-being of the animals.

The facility will be managed by Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds and Logan County Dog Warden Deputy Jacob Boyd.

Inmates from the Logan County Jail will assist with animal care, building maintenance, and cleaning during non-public hours.

To support the construction and ongoing operations of the shelter, the Logan County Commissioners have approved new dog tag rates for 2025, increasing from $18 to $20.

This adjustment is intended to help fund the staffing and operational costs of the facility.

Additionally, opportunities for public volunteers will be available.

To support the construction and operation of the shelter, the Logan County Commissioners have designated the Logan County Sheriff’s Office BEHIND THE BADGE Volunteers, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, to accept financial donations.

Contributions can be made in several ways:
Cash Donations: Drop off at the Sheriff’s Office, 284 County Road 32 S, Bellefontaine, OH 43311, during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.).
Checks: Mail to the above address.
Credit Card Donations: Contact Pam Reames at 937-539-0403 or via email at [email protected].

Sponsorship opportunities for kennels, visitation rooms, and other areas within the facility will be announced at a later date.

A ceremonial groundbreaking for the shelter is scheduled for September 27, 2024, at 1 p.m. on the jail grounds.

The public is invited to attend and celebrate this significant step toward improving animal welfare in Logan County.
