West Liberty-Salem has named its seniors of the month: Emery Longaberger and Garrett Wallen.
Emery Longaberger, daughter of Erin and Mark Longaberger, is a standout senior at West Liberty-Salem. Active in soccer, cheerleading, student government, multiple academic clubs, and performing arts, she’s also a member of the National Honor Society and a leader among her peers.
Her favorite school memory is having potlucks with friends during lunch.
If she were principal for a day, she’d give students a 2-hour delay to sleep in.
Emery says Mrs. Lewis, her former bus driver, has been a major inspiration.
“Her kindness touches every student she meets. Ever since she was my bus driver, she has continued to support and cheer me on. Her compassion is something I truly admire and hope to carry with me as I grow older.”
She also credits her parents’ constant support as a key influence in her life.
Emery is excited for what’s next, as she plans to attend The Ohio State University, majoring in Neuroscience on a Pre-Med track.
Garrett Wallen is known for his dedication both in the classroom and on the track. The son of Dustin and Leann Wallen, Garrett is a member of the cross country, track, and basketball teams, and is also part of the National Honor Society. He consistently earns high honors for academic achievement.
One of his favorite high school memories is being in the student section, cheering on his peers and soaking up the school spirit.
If he were principal for a day, Garrett says he’d let students use their phones during study hall and Homeroom — a move sure to win him some popularity points.
Garrett credits Coach Mike Louden as one of his biggest inspirations.
“He is a very nice guy and one of the best coaches a person could ask for.”
When asked what advice he’d give to parents, he said:
“Get your kid involved in sports — that’s where I’ve made many of my closest friends.”
Looking ahead, he plans to attend college next year, continuing to push himself both academically and athletically.
