Even with Olympic competition already underway, the opening ceremonies of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Games take place today, Friday, February 6, at 2 p.m. EST.

Among the athletes preparing for the spectacle is Bellefontaine native Louie Vito, representing Team Italy in his third Olympic appearance and making history as the oldest halfpipe snowboarder ever to compete in the Games.

Vito’s journey to Milano-Cortina is unique. He previously competed for the United States, including at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and now returns to the Olympic stage under the Italian flag, honoring his grandparents’ roots and family heritage. At an age when most halfpipe snowboarders have retired, Vito continues to compete at the highest level, demonstrating remarkable longevity and sustained elite performance.

Vito will compete in the halfpipe snowboarding event on Wednesday, February 11. If he qualifies for the finals, he will take the stage once more on Friday, February 13, vying for a chance at Olympic gold.

Being the veteran in his sport, Vito talks about his experience:

Vito shares his thoughts on the personal and professional significance of these Olympic Games. He reflects on the evolution of the sport and the ways he hopes to support and inspire younger competitors, both on and off the snow. He discusses the importance of balancing individual goals with team commitments, and the role of heritage, community, and personal pride in shaping his journey. He also offers a glimpse of his excitement for the opening ceremonies and the experience of representing Italy on home soil.

Vito’s story extends beyond competition. He has long been recognized for his influence on snowboarding, his presence in mainstream media, and his role as an ambassador for the sport. From Bellefontaine to the global stage, his Olympic journey is a testament to perseverance, heritage, and the continuing evolution of athletic excellence.
