A man was arrested late Monday night following a reported domestic disturbance at an apartment on Berwick Drive.
Officers with the Urbana Police Division responded to an apartment in the 200 block of Berwick Drive around 11:50 p.m. on March 16 after receiving a report of a disturbance involving yelling and property damage.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a female victim outside the residence who showed visible injuries, including cuts, bruising, and swelling to her arm. She told officers the suspect, identified as Christopher McGillivray, 27, of Urbana, had assaulted her and slammed her arm in a door during an argument. She also reported being shoved multiple times throughout the day.
Inside the apartment, officers observed damage to a bathroom door consistent with the victim’s account. The victim stated she had been attempting to get her child into the bathroom when McGillivray forced the door shut on her arm and began punching the door.
McGillivray, who had visible injuries to his knuckles, admitted to punching the door but denied assaulting the victim. A witness at the scene told officers the two had been arguing and confirmed the door-related incident but did not report seeing physical contact beyond that.
Emergency medical services responded to evaluate the victim, who was later transported to a local hospital. She was treated for significant bruising but no fractures, according to police.
Officers noted the odor of alcohol on McGillivray, who stated he had been drinking prior to the incident.
McGillivray was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the Urbana Police Division before being booked into the Tri-County Jail.
He was charged with domestic violence and assault, both first-degree misdemeanors, as well as disorderly conduct, a minor misdemeanor.
The investigation remains ongoing.
