Two drivers were arrested for OVI recently.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office arrested James Newland of Saint John’s for OVI early Monday morning.

Newland was pulled over for speeding (68 in a 55) in the area of State Route 117 and State Route 273.

Deputies immediately noticed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Newland.  His eyes were bloodshot and glassy.

When asked how much alcohol he consumed before driving Newland said “probably four beers”.

He consented to field sobriety tests and failed.

Newland was taken to the Logan County Jail where he agreed to take a breath test.  The result of the test was a blood alcohol content of .270.  The legal limit in Ohio is .08.

James Newland was issued citations for OVI, speed, and marked lanes.

Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department observed a vehicle turn northbound onto South Main Street without using a turn signal Sunday morning around 2:00.

The vehicle kept traveling at a higher rate than the speed limit, then slowed down, and weaved within the northbound lane. The vehicle failed to stop behind the painted stop bar at the intersection of Rush Avenue and North Madriver Street and traveled over the double yellow line.

A traffic stop was initiated, but the vehicle continued for several blocks and continued to weave within its lane. The vehicle slowed down and came to a stop in the 1500 block of State Route 47 East.

Felicia Baker, 28, was identified.

When asked what took her so long to stop, Baker said she didn’t know that the officer was “following her.”

Signs of impairment were observed from Baker. A strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was coming from her breath as she was speaking, her eyes were bloodshot and glossy, and her speech was slurred.

When asked how much alcohol she drank, she said “probably three beers” and admitted to having “a couple” mixed drinks.

She agreed to perform field sobriety tests, failed, and was transported to the Bellefontaine Police Department.

She agreed to submit a breath test. Her BAC was .223, almost three times the legal limit.

Baker was placed under arrest for OVI, OVI (equal or greater than .17), speed, driving in marked lanes, and failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.

Baker was released to a sober driver.
