An armed man was taken into custody Thursday morning in Urbana after reportedly threatening to harm himself or shoot at officers.
Police were called to the 100 block of East Reynolds Street just after 8:30 AM, after reports that a man was armed with a handgun and had made suicidal threats.
The situation began after an argument between the man and his girlfriend.
When officers arrived, the man was seen outside near the corner of the home.
Officers commanded him to surrender, then ran to the back of the house.
A single gunshot was heard moments later.
He reappeared shortly after with his hands raised, claiming the shot was accidental.
Officers took him into custody at gunpoint without further incident.
Police searched the home and confirmed that no one was injured.
The woman involved in the earlier dispute was found safe inside.
Officers also recovered a 9mm handgun and a spent shell casing near the area where the man had surrendered.
The man, 25-year-old Zaine Deal, was found to have two active warrants—one for a probation violation and another for failing to appear in court.
He was taken to the Urbana Police Division for processing and faces several charges, including assault, domestic violence, inducing panic, possession of drugs, and disorderly conduct.
He was then booked into the Tri-County Regional Jail and is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning.
