On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at approximately 10:00 PM, police were dispatched to the area of Love’s Truck stop about a possible intoxicated driver.
Officers were informed that a Logan County Sheriff’s Deputy was in an unmarked cruiser and observed several marked lane violations.
Officers were told the vehicle was pulled into the parking lot of Speedway, 600 East Sandusky Avenue.
When they arrived, they saw a white Ford Pick-up with a male outside of it and a Sheriff’s Deputy speaking with him.
When the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Cefer Abdias Velazquez Cruze, saw the officers coming, he took off running eastbound.
Cruze was quickly tackled to the ground and placed in handcuffs.
Officers asked Cruze how much he had to drink, as there was an odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his breath as he spoke, and he said he had a “couple” of beers.
A passenger in the vehicle tried to get away while Cruze was running.
The passenger, identified as 22-year-old Manuel Hernandez, was located behind the gas station and detained in handcuffs.
He was later released to a sober individual.
At that point, Cruze was placed under arrest.
Cruze was transported to the Logan County Jail and administered a breathalyzer test.
He was unable to provide two sufficient samples within the .02 agreement.
Additionally, jail staff refused to accept Cruze until he could be checked at the hospital for a possible foreign body concealed inside his person.
Cruze was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital, where he was seen by a medical professional and cleared.
While at the hospital, a hospital nurse drew Cruze’s blood, which was packaged to be sent to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Crime Lab for analysis.
He was then transported back to the Logan County jail, where he was lodged for OVI and obstructing official business.
Cruze and Hernandez’s information was given to dispatch to contact ICE.
ICE reported that Cruze was legally in the United States until 2019 when his visa expired.
Hernandez was unable to be found by ICE.
