Thursday, a Logan County jury convicted Russell McCoy on several charges, including aggravated possession of drugs, a third-degree felony, with a one-year firearm specification, improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony, and having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony.
The firearm specification requires at least one year in prison.
McCoy was arrested on July 30, 2024, after Logan County Sheriff’s deputies found him speeding on State Route 33.
He testified that he was returning to his Indiana home from Columbus to celebrate his birthday.
During the stop, deputies found 5 grams of methamphetamine in the vehicle, along with two handguns.
Authorities also noted that one of the handguns matched a Taurus GX charm found on McCoy’s key chain.
The prosecution was handled by Logan County Assistant Prosecutors Nathan Yohey and Nick Williams, while McCoy was represented by Bellefontaine attorney Veronica Armstrong.
A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for November 7, 2025.
