Two Urbana residents have officially announced their candidacies for the Urbana City Schools Board of Education ahead of the November election. Both say they’re eager to bring new energy, experience, and a community-driven focus to the district.
Drew Sponheim has entered the race, emphasizing his belief that strong schools are the foundation of a strong community. He and his wife, Kathy, have built their life and business in Urbana, where they are raising two daughters who attend Urbana Elementary. Sponheim says having children in the district gives him a firsthand perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing local schools.
He currently serves as Co-Vice President of the Urbana Lions Club and has been active in numerous community and youth programs. Over the past three years, he has coached youth sports through the YMCA, volunteered in local classrooms, and taught pre-K Sunday school. He has also supported student organizations like Urbana High School’s DECA chapter, which helps prepare students for business and leadership careers.
Sponheim lists fiscal responsibility and collaboration as key priorities, noting that Urbana City Schools has been operating at a deficit for the past seven years, gradually drawing down its surplus. He says he hopes to help chart a more sustainable path forward, adding that many in the district are ready for fresh ideas and strong support for educators.
Nate Long, a former educator and current owner of Long Road CrossFit, has also announced his campaign for a board seat. Long says his decision to run stems from his continued passion for serving the community. Through his business, he has focused on promoting health, teamwork, and community connection. These are values he plans to bring to his role as a school board member.
Although he is no longer in the classroom, Long says he is excited for the opportunity to help guide the future of local schools. He hopes to apply his experience in team building and leadership from both his education and business background to the work of the board.
Both Sponheim and Long will be running against three incumbents: Jim Arter, Amy Paul, and Darrell Thomas. They say they’re looking forward to connecting with residents in the months ahead as the campaign season continues.
