Multi-agency rescue saves two horses from icy pond in Champaign County

A coordinated, multi-agency rescue effort saved two horses that fell through the ice on a Champaign County pond Saturday night, despite frigid temperatures and hazardous road conditions.

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, at approximately 8:52 p.m., the Champaign County 911 Center received a call reporting two horses trapped in an icy pond in the 1000 block of South Parkview Road.

Temperatures were below freezing, and a Level 2 Snow Emergency was in effect at the time.

Responders from the Mechanicsburg Fire Department, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, and Mechanicsburg Police Department quickly arrived on scene, with Mechanicsburg Fire leading rescue operations.

Fire crews responded with a rescue unit, grass truck, and medic, navigating dangerous road conditions to reach the scene.

The horses were found submerged up to their necks in icy water.

Firefighters immediately began extrication efforts when they arrived on scene at 9:10 p.m. 

The first horse was pulled from the pond at 9:13 p.m., followed by the second horse at 9:21 p.m.

An emergency veterinarian arrived approximately 20 minutes later to evaluate the animals.

After speaking with the horses’ owners, responders confirmed that both animals are doing well and showed no ongoing medical concerns.

Officials praised the teamwork displayed during the incident, crediting the successful rescue to strong coordination between agencies and assistance from community members on scene.

Agencies involved expressed their appreciation to the Mechanicsburg Fire Department, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Mechanicsburg Police Department, Champaign County 911 Center, and residents who assisted during the rescue.
